Great White Sharks

A trip to guadalupe island to experience Great White sharks up close and personal.

Guadalupe Island (Mexico) is the top destination for great white shark encounters. This small volcanic island located in the Pacific 240 kilometers (150 miles) off the west coast of Mexico's Baja California peninsula outperforms both South Africa and Australia with shark-seeing consistency and watching conditions. Only Guadalupe Island can boast shark viewing in beautiful clear blue water with 100 - 150 foot visibility. We have identified 228 unique great white sharks in the bay where we stage our submersible cage diving operations, which guarantees unforgettable encounters.

Great white shark encounters at Guadalupe Island are nothing short of spectacular. Guadalupe feels like a remote outpost at the end of the earth but is actually incredibly easy to get to. Our trips meet in San Diego, California with coach transfers to Ensenada, Mexico. It’s the best destination in the world for calm, clear water and a consistently high probability of multiple shark encounters per day.

The sheer number of animals in the bay we dive is jaw-droppingly amazing. We see great whites on three out of four dives. The bay itself is home to 228 recognized individuals ranging from 12 to 19 feet long! At times, we have seen as many as nine sharks on one dive—and that’s because Guadalupe is just the sort of place where magic regularly happens in the water.

When I first met Richard, my camera was on automatic, my strobes were shot through a TTL, and I was shooting Jpegs.  Two trips later, and I am confidently shooting Raw with my camera set on Manual and finally no more TTL.   Oh ya, and the camaraderie with the group each time was amazing.

I dive for the tactical experience and do not wish to be distracted by having to concentrate on technical issues like aperture, color balance, exposure etc.  When I do record underwater, it’s mostly always video as opposed to still images.  Richard’s workshop was perfect for me because he discusses all aspects of the diving experience, not just the still photography aspect and the search thereof.  He’s personable, pleasant to be around and has the same sarcastic sense of humor as I, ha ha, which made this expedition so memorable to me!  I highly recommend a workshop with Richard, wherever in the world it may take you.
